About
Dr. F. Javier González is currently a researcher staff in the Marine Geology Group at the Geological Survey of Spain (IGME) an autonomous institute attached to the Science Secretary. He is Collaborator at the Department of Crystallography and Mineralogy of the “Universidad Complutense de Madrid” (UCM). His research activities are concerned with mineralogy, petrology, geochemistry and metallogenesis, especially on deep sea biomineralizations as Fe-Mn nodules and crusts and polymetallic sulphides related to cold and hydrothermal seeps. Currently, his research activity is focused on mineralogical, petrographical and geochemical studies of ferromanganese deposits and their spatial and temporal evolution, with special emphasis on the palaeoenvironmental records of fluid venting and influence of bottom-current circulation in these deposits. He has mainly worked on the Iberian continental margin: Gulf of Cadiz and Galicia Bank region and Canary Islands, where he has been involved in several national and international oceanographic cruises and research projects since 2004, when he was iniciating his PhD. He is an expertise on ferromanganese deposits along the continental slope of the Gulf of Cadiz.
The Marine Geology Group within the IGME has a great experience in the field of deep sea research since 1992. The group has taken part in six research cruises in Antarctica (Antarctica Peninsula, Weddell Sea and Scotia Sea). It has also organised cruises in the Gulf of Cadiz, Moroccan margin, Canary Islands, Celtic Sea, Galicia and Bay of Biscay aboard different research vessels as the Spanish “Hespérides” and the French IFREMER “L´Atalante”. The Marine Geology Group has participated in the EUROMARGINS programme of the European Science Foundation (ESF). Among the scientific aims of the Marine Geology Group, there are the exploration of contouritic systems, oceanic cold seeps and hydrothermal deep-sea environments from shelf to deep sea (up to 5500 m water depth).
